Australian Bass are a hardy, territorial fish. In a farm dam, they require no artificial feed, being adequately fed by natural food including frogs, tadpoles, dragon fly larvae and small insects present in all farm dams. Survival rates are high in farm dams providing there are no or few eels in the stocked dam or birds such as cormorants and herons which prey on small fish including Australian Bass. We have one report of a dam stocked with an order of 100 fingerlings being drained several years later, with 105 adult fish surviving (we always supply a few extra fish). Another report of a dam near Cooma has Australian Bass fingerlings surviving winter conditions freezing the top of the water and also surviving 45 degree summer conditions. When matured, Australian Bass will not breed in a farm dam. Australian Bass grow to a maximum size of around 3kg and have a life span of about 25 years. They are a fun species to fish and good eating. Dollar-For-Dollar is applicable for this species.

Estuary Perch are a hardy, schooling fish. They are usually spotted in large schools of up to 100 individuals. Estuary Perch are a fun but challenging species to fish. It is not unusual to fish one side of a snag without any results, then fishing the opposite side with good results. They are less suitable for farm dams as they are most comfortable in brackish water and are therefore best stocked into public waterways.

Silver Perch

Silver Perch are a hardy and good farm dam species. They feed on vegetative matter and small insects and are an easy and fun species to fish. They are nice eating and survival rates are high in farm dams. Catch and release survival rate is near 100% as silver perch have small mouths and tend to 'nibble' and thus are only usually hooked on the side of the mouth.

Mulloway (Jewfish)

Narooma Aquaculture is currently developing the breeding of Mulloway and hopes to have juvenile fish available soon.

Mulloway are caught in estuaries and off beaches and grow to a maximum size of 40kg. They are arguably one of the best tasting fish in local waters. Narooma Aquaculture's aim is to facilitate farms that grow out Jewfish for fish markets which reduce the pressure on natural stocks.
